Practically nothing is known about Philippe Caron - indeed it is not absolutely clear than Philippe was his first name, as his name invariably appears simply as 'Caron' in the sources. He would seem to have been a contemporary of Antoine de Busnois (1430-1492). In spite of his obscurity to us he was much respected in his own time: Loyset Compère referred to him as "magister cantilenarum in his Prière pour les musiciens, and Tinctoris listed him in the company of Busnois and Ockeghem. Many of his pieces appear in Italian sources, so he may well have made the journey south that so many other northern musicians of his day undertook.
Caron may have been obscure, but several of his songs survive in many manuscripts: this is especially true of Helas pour poura devenir, which has come down in at least 15 sources. It is perhaps the elegant arcs of his melodies that were the attraction.

In this edition the original note values have been halved. All five pieces are printed essentially after Florence BR 230 (olim Magl. XIX 59). Editorial accidentals are printed small above the stave, applying to the one note only; original accidentals are taken as applying to the whole bar.
