These two sinfonie are taken from the Intermedii (entertainments introduced between the acts of plays) that were part of the celebrations for the marriage of Ferdinand de Medici and Christine of Lorraine in Florence in 1589. Cristoforo (Cristofano) Malvezzi (1547-1599), a leading Florentine musician, contributed many of the pieces; other composers represented were Peri and Cavalieri.
The music for the event was published two years later by Giacomo Vincenti in Venice under the title Intermedii // et concerti Fatti per la Commedia rappresentata in Firenze / Nelle Nozze del Serenissimo Don Ferdinando Medici/ e Madama Christiana di Loreno ... together with some descriptions of the event.
In this edition the original note values have been halved in the second piece, retained in the first. A few editorial accidentals appear above the stave, applying to the one note only.
