These two chansons are among the more famous of the work of Claudin de Sermisy (c. 1490-1562). Both were frequently arranged in many different ways, and both travelled well into Central Europe (Dont vient cela also travelled in the opposite direction to Scotland, where it survives with a Scots text - to be published in Charles Foster s forthcoming anthology of renaissance music from Scotland). Pierre Attaingnant published both pieces in different forms, the 4-part version printed here, the settings for voice and lute also included here, as well as versions for lute solo and for keyboard.
We are also fortunate that since the poetry of Clement Marot (c. 1496-1544) has survived from literary sources, we have access to a second verse to each of the songs, though the musical sources give only the first verse.
In this edition the original note values have been halved. Dont vient cela has been transposed up a fourth. Editorial accidentals are printed above the stave, applying to the one note only. If the voice-and-lute versions are used in conjunction with the four-part ones, the editorial accidentals will Renerally need to be observed.
These pieces may be performed in a variety of ways: four voices, or four instruments (recorders, viols, etc.), or a mixture of voices and instruments. The lute part can be used to accompany a single singer, or with a quartet; alternatively the top part can be sung, with the tenor played on a flute, and the bass on a viol. There are many possibilities!
